Day 1 : Arrival in Ashgabat


  1. At night or early in the morning, meet at airport & transfer to htl. Check in & O/N

  2. Start sightseeing in Turkmen capital - Ashgabat, visiting the Independence park, monument of Neutrality, Earthquake Memorial, Ertogrul Ghazi mosque. 

  3. Visit the archeological site “Nisa” (The ruins have mud brick remains of fortifications and palaces, temples, ceremony hall, treasury building. 

  4. It covers the remains of Parthian civilization

    1.  The richly decorated architecture was revealed as the result of archeological excavations in the 20th century

    2. According to the UNESCO description, Nisa played an important role of a barrier to the Roman Empire expansion to the west, while playing the communication and trading centre between east and west, between central Asia and Mediterranean cultures

  5. Visit the Turkmenbashy spiritual mosque in Gypjak

  6. Return to Ashgabat

  7. Night drive in Ashgabat (if requested)

  8. Night at Ashgabat hotel


Day 2:  Ashgabat- Kov Ata - Nokhur


  1. En route to Kopet Dag mountains 

  2. Discover on the way Kov Ata cave lake & Turkmenbashy mosque & Ahal Teke private horse farm

    1. Experts say the Akhal-Teke breed is at least 3,000 years old

    2. may be the last remaining strain of the Turkoman (a horse that has existed since 2400 B.C.)

    3. In the Middle Ages (500 to 1500 A.D.), Akhal-Tekes lived with nomadic tribesmen near the Kopet Dag Mountains in Turkmenistan. The nomads treated the horses as part of their families, tethering them near their shelters

    4. In the early 1900s, Russians used Akhal-Tekes as cavalry horses 

    5. Today they excel in sport - particularly in racing, show jumping, dressage and endurance racing

  3. Continue drive in mountains

  4. Arrival to Nokhur

  5. Visit village and meet local people

  6. Homestay overnight


Day 3: Nokhur - Balkanabat


  1. Drive to Balkanabat

  2. Visit on route Parau Bibi mausoleum

  3. Stop at Mollakara resort to visit local salt lake

  4. Arrive in Balkanabat

  5. Check in to hotel

  6. Time for leisure 

  7. Night at hotel


Day 4: Balkanabat - Dekhistan - Balkanabat


  1. Continue 4x4 drive to Dehistan historical site

  2. Discover the Messerian plain & the remains of cathedral mosque, minarets, madrassah of Dehistan, mausoleum- mosque of Shir Kebir, Mashhad mausoleums remains 

  3. Return to Balkanabat

  4. Night at hotel


Day 5:  Balkanabat - Yangy Kala - Turkmenbashy


  1. Drive to Yangy Kala

    1. The south eastern bordering region of Gara Bogaz Gol bay spectacular view of the former sea bed, and millions years work of natural forces to form the canyons in its unusual shapes and variety of colors

  2. Arrive and discover Yangy Kala canyons. Visit Gozli Ata pilgrimage

  3. Continue drive to Turkmenbashy. 

  4. Arrive in Avaza Caspian Sea resort 

  5. Overnight at hotel


Day 6:  Turkmenbashy - Ashgabat


  1. Free program at Caspian Sea resort 

  2. 12:00 hotel checkout 

  3. Short sightseeing in Turkmenbashy 

  4. Afternoon flight to Ashgabat


Day 7:  Ashgabat - Mary


  1. Drive to Mary

  2. Stops along the way: Anau pilgrimage place (remains of Seyitjemalatdin mosque XV c) and Abiverd historical site

  3. Local lunch to taste fish from a local lake

  4. Arrive in Mary

  5. Overnight at hotel


Day 8: Mary - Merv


  1. Drive to Merv (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

    1. The ancient city of Merv (Persian Marv), contains a succession of ancient cities developed over a period of 2500 years at the heart of the oasis formed by the Murgab river delta and close to the course of where the main river channel flowed in ancient times

    2. In 1999, the United Nations declared Merv a World Heritage Site. Sights: Alexandria Margiana (Erk Kala), Antiochia Margiana (Gyaur Kala) remains, Sultan Kala, Sultan Ahmad Sanjar mausoleum, Yusuf Hamadany shrine, Mohammed ibn Zeid mausoleum, Gyz Kala castles

  2. Return to Mary

  3. Check into hotel 

  4. Options for afternoon visits: Mary history museum or Talkhatan Baba pilgrimage (XI c mausoleum/ Seljuk architecture) & Ahun Baba madrassah remains XIX c 

  5. Overnight at hotel


Day 9: Mary - Gonur


  1. Drive to Gonur archeological site in Karakum desert

  2. Arrival and sightseeing

    1. The capital or “imperial city” of a Bronze Age state (which probably has thousands of sites around the desert, still covered by sand)

    2. The people of the Gonur state had lead sedentary lives in an oasis, richly watered by the Murgab river (after many centuries Murgab river changed its course and now can be seen in present day Mary)

  3. Return to Mary

  4. Overnight at hotel


Day 10: Mary - Ashgabat


  1. Flight to Ashgabat

  2. Visit Turkmen carpet museum & discover Turcoman carpets 

    1. Turkmen families lived in distinctive tents, called "yurts", and the various types of weavings served particular functions, both decorative and "architectural" - large carpets (hali), entrance covers (ensi), prayer rugs, cot covers, small rugs, tent-bands (jolami). Turkmen weaving was (and largely remains) carried out by women

  3. Continue sightseeing in Ashgabat

  4. 1PM check-in at the hotel

  5. Free program 

  6. Overnight at hotel


Day 11: Ashgabat - Darvaza (‘Gates to Hell’)


  1. Drive to Darvaza 

  2. Visit Yerbent village along the way

  3. Arrive and explore the old gas craters

  4. Venture in the desert to see the big, fire gas crater

  5. Set up camp to see the crater at night 

  6. Overnight in tent (camping)


Day 12: Darvaza - Dashoguz


  1. Drive to Dashoguz  

  2. Visit on the way: 

    1. Shasenem fortress

    2. Zamakshir (Izmukshir) fortress

    3. Ismamut Ata pilgrimage 

  3. Return to Dashoguz

  4. Hotel overnight


Day 13: Dashoguz - Kunya Urgench - Dashoguz


  1. Start drive to Kunya Urgench

  2. Sightseeing in Kunya Urgench historical site (“Kunya Urgench” contains the monuments:

    1. The mausoleums of Il Arslan 12th century, Sultan Tekesh 12th century, Turebeck Khanym 14th century, Najm addin Cubra 14th and Sultan Ali 16th century, 

    2. Minaret of Kutluk Timur 14th century (probably started in 11th ) 62 meters high, the tallest old brick construction in Central Asia

    3. In 2005, it became a UNESCO world heritage site

  3. Continue drive and visit: the Ashyk Aydyn Pir, Gyaur Kala fortresses

  4. Return drive to Dashoguz

  5. Arrive and check into hotel

  6. Overnight at hotel (order of visits on Day 13-14 can be changed)


Day 14: Dashoguz - Dashoguz Border       


  1. After breakfast, drive to the Dashoguz border crossing

  2. Formalities and goodbyes

  3. End of program


*This tour ends on the border with Uzbekistan for those who are continuing onwards. If you wish to return to Ashgabat for a flight, that is also a possibility
