Turkmenistan is a secretive ex-Soviet state in Central Asia, often referred to as 'Central Asia's Hermit Kingdom.' A reference to its likeness with North Korea.
The country, the most mysterious in the region, is known for its permanent neutrality, personality cult surrounding its leadership and its historic cities and artifacts because of its location on. the ancient 'Silk Road.
The 'Manat' is the currency of Turkmenistan. It was introduced on 1 November 1993, replacing the Russian Ruble at a rate of 1 manat to 500 Russian Rubles. The manat was subdivided into 100 tenge, the equivalent to cents.
The word "manat" is borrowed from Persian word 'munat' and the Russian word 'moneta' meaning "coin".
In addition, 'manat' was the name of the Soviet Ruble in the region of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic and other Soviet republics with largely Turkic populations.
