Nagorno-Karabakh & Armenia: 8-Day Tour

Day 1: Arrival to Yerevan (D)
 

  1. We’ll meet all tour participants at the airport 

  2. Then head to the boutique hotel, Villa Delenda, located in the city center, to check in and rest

  3. Soon afterward, we’ll go on a walk to show you the lively and cozy city of Yerevan 

    1. Full of picturesque streets, delicious restaurants and hospitable residents 

  4. Dinner

  5. Night in Yerevan

 

Day 2: Via Karvajar to Stepanakert (B/L/D)
 

  1. In the early morning we’ll be off to Lake Sevan, 

    1. Armenians call it a sea for its great size and beauty 

  2. We’ll make a couple of stops along the way to see beautiful Hayravank Monastery and to taste rare Armenian cheeses at a farm 

  3. Next, the road will take us to Nagorno-Karabakh and its northern region of Karvajar 

  4. There, we will have several stops on the way 

    1. At the Vank, to visit Gandzasar, Karabakh’s largest and best decorated monastery and see the village streets renovated by Armenian philanthropist 

  5. Arrive to Stepanakert at the end of the day

  6. Check in for 4 nights at the Park hotel

  7. Evening walks around the city center and 

  8. Welcome dinner

  9. Overnight in Stepanakert

 

Day 3: Central area of Karabakh (B/L)
 

  1. The first part of the day we will spend in Stepanakert 

  2. Explore local bazaar

  3. Meet with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a short talk

  4. Then we’ll drive to Tigranakert 

    1. An ancient Armenian town that was established in the 1st century BC by the Armenian king, Tigranes the Great. 

    2. The town was excavated only a few years ago, so we will be accompanied by a local archaeologist as we explore its fortified walls and traces of early Christianity. 

    3. The excavation site is near the huge (now days totally abandoned) town of Aghdam, which make the trip there even more exciting.

  5. Overnight in Stepanakert

 

Day 4: Day in Shushi (B/L)
 

  1. In the morning, we’ll ascend to the old capital of Karabakh, the fortress town of Shushi, where we’ll spend the whole day 

  2. We’ll visit private Museum of Karabakh Carpets 

  3. See the ancient semi-abandoned mosques and mansions and explore the fortress walls 

  4. Meet with some interesting locals 

  5. Then we will go to the gorge of the Karkar River, which flows under the Sushi rock 

    1. This narrow canyon, sandwiched between vertical cliffs, hides the ruins of an old village of millers, and an awesome forest with waterfalls and rocks 

  6. We’ll walk along the river

  7. Drive back to Stepanakert

  8. Overnight in Stepanakert

 

Day 5: Trip to Southern Karabakh (B/L)
 

  1. We’ll travel to the Hadrut province

    1. Once the historical region of Dizaq. The principal adventure of the day is the ascent to Toghasar mountain

  2. The medieval temple of Gtich Monastery is at the mountain top

  3. After descending to the bottom, we’ll have lunch with locals

  4. Then we will explore the village of Togh

    1. The historical center of Dizaq and home to the winery of the Avetisyan family 

  5. Here, we’ll taste Kataro, one of Armenia’s finest wines made from the indigenous Khindogny variety of grapes 

  6. On the way back to Stepanakert, we’ll stop to visit one of the planet’s oldest trees, a 2000-year-old sycamore

  7. Overnight in Stepanakert

 

Day 6: From Karabakh to Syunik (B/L)
 

  1. In the morning we’ll leave Karabakh via the Lachin corridor

  2. The “road of life,” which connected Stepanakert to Armenia during the last war

  3. Right after crossing the border, we’ll visit the cave town of Khndzoresk 

    1. Where people used to live in houses carved into the rocks right up until the mid-20th century

  4. After Khndzoresk, we’ll ride the ultra-modern reverse cableway (also the world’s longest), to get to the Tatev Monastery 

    1. This convent, which stands at the edge of a deep canyon, was the key religious and learning center of medieval Armenia, complete with a university and a book-producing workshop staffed by outstanding miniaturists 

  5. Dinner

  6. Overnight at the Mirhav Hotel, located in the nearby town of Goris 

 

Day 7: Via Vayots Dzor to Yerevan (B/L)
 

  1. We’ll begin our journey back to Yerevan

  2. The first stop will be the “Armenian Stonehenge” 

    1. A megalithic complex called Zorats Karer, whose stone structures have been a part of this empty plateau for over 4,000 years 

  3. By lunchtime, we’ll be at village of Areni

    1. The center of Armenia’s principal wine region 

    2. Vine cultivation began here as early as the Copper Age 

    3. We’ll visit a local cave where evidence of the world’s oldest winemaking activities were discovered by archeologists

  4. Lunch at a cave tavern, located in the middle of the red rock canyon 

  5. After the meal, we’ll walk along the canyon to Noravank Monastery

    1. You’ll be dazzled by intricate khachkar cross stones and base reliefs produced by the celebrated artist, Momik

  6. The last leg of our journey to Yerevan runs through the Ararat plain

    1. Where we’ll take a detour to visit Khor Virap, a medieval monastery that stands on a low-rise rock, and offers a tremendous view of the mighty Mount Ararat 

  7. After visiting the monastery, we’ll drive back to Yerevan 

  8. Dinner

  9. Overnight at the  Villa Delenda hotel in the city center

 

Day 8: Last day in Yerevan (B)
 

  1. After much adventuring, our journey is over! We’ll say our goodbyes and make sure you get to the airport on time for your flight
